Adolescent Substance Abuse Program

Youth with problem behaviors can often benefit from an intensive group where they can share feelings and receive encouragement from their peers. Children’s Alternative Support Services (CASS) offers a safe, structured environment where children can begin to heal and grow.

About the program

The CASS group targets children 7-11 years of age who are experiencing behavioral and/or emotional problems, loss, emotional trauma, neglect, or abuse, in the home or at school.

CASS is offered four hours a day, Monday through Friday at 2600 Oakland Avenue, Elkhart.

CASS is a group treatment process which helps children:

  • Express their feelings
  • Problem solve
  • Gain self-esteem
  • Learn self-control
  • Support and be supported by other children in similar situations

CASS group curriculum includes the following topics:

  • Anger management (controlling/channeling anger)
  • Self-protection (teaching children to be assertive) and learning about safe touch
  • Feelings (learning to “name” specific emotions)
  • Addictions (educating about the effects of drug and alcohol use)
  • Grief and loss
  • Relaxation

Participants in CASS may be eligible for free transportation to and from the program. See program leaders for details.

Fees

Fees for CASS group are $44 per hour. Elkhart County residents may be eligible for a reduction of fees based on family income and size. Medicaid, Medicaid rehabilitation, and commercial insurance may reimburse all or part of the fee, pending prior approval.
