About the program

CASS features two groups that target children 7-11 years of age who are experiencing social, behavioral and/or emotional problems at home or school that prevent them from functioning at their highest potential. Both groups meet at 2600 Oakland Avenue, Elkhart, with a typical stay of 8-12 weeks. Hours for both groups may vary during the summer.

The regular CASS group is offered from 12:00-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and includes lunch.

The transition CASS group is less intensive and is offered from 1:30-4:00, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This program is designed for those children who can remain in school for longer periods of time, but who still need some extra support. The transition CASS group can be a step-up or step-down from the regular CASS group or is also appropriate for children who do not need the intensity of the full CASS group.

CASS is a group treatment process which helps children:

  • Express their feelings
  • Problem solve
  • Gain self-esteem
  • Learn self-control
  • Support and be supported by other children in similar situations
  • Build cooperation and teamwork skills

CASS group curriculum includes the following topics:

  • Anger management (alternative problem-solving skills)
  • Self-protection (teaching children to be assertive) and learning about safe touch
  • Feelings (learning to “name” specific emotions)
  • Expressive play
  • Grief and loss
  • Relaxation

Participants in CASS may be eligible for free transportation to and from the program. See program leaders for details.

Fees

Elkhart County residents may be eligible for a reduction of fees based on family income and size. Medicaid, Medicaid rehabilitation, and commercial insurance may reimburse all or part of the fee, pending prior approval.
